Chapter 1
Defining Community

|
Whether you are the mayor or a student you play a role in the community. But, just how much do you really know about your community? And, why should you study your community history? Learning about your community's past helps you to understand why your community is the way it is today. Knowledge about it gives you the power to make good decisions for your future. If your experience through Community Quest is successful, you will have found an enjoyable way to learn about where you live. Hopefully you will share the information you receive with friends and family so that they, too, can look at your community in a more thoughtful way.
What is a community? If you look in Webster's dictionary, the word community is defined as:
1. A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and have a cultural and historical heritage.
2. A group of organisms, both plant and animal, living together in an ecologically related fashion in a definite region: an oak forest community.
